Meet your site coordinator

Michael Doughety is the site coordinator at SBCS. He runs the reading center and will be your go-to source for any questions you may have during your time as a reading partner. He is always available to share tips and tricks, review lessons, and help keep your student on track.

Michael Doughery

AmeriCorps Site Coordinator at Southwest Baltimore Charter School

As a lifelong lover of literacy, there are few things I deem to be as important for personal growth than a healthy relationship with reading. Baltimore is a wonderful city but it struggles in this area; more than eighty pecent of the 4th grade students in Baltimore are reading significantly below grade lebel and this is something that is not liekly to change without intervention. That's why I signed on to work with this organization. Reading Partners is a structured and effective curriculum that really does work. It not only gives struggling students that skills they need to succeed, but it reminds them that success is very much within their reach. For me, that is the most crucial and rewarding part of the work we do. Watching a student with little to no enthusiam for books become enthralled with the act of reading is like nothing else you will ever experience, and Reading Partners provides the opportunity to be an integral part of that process.

Martin Widmann

AmeriCorps Literacy Lead for Southwest Baltimore Charter School

Marty is excited to be a Literacy Lead this year and is determined to help his students improve their reading skills. Marty plans on working closely with Mike, SBCS staff, and Reading Partners staff in order to achieve the best results with his students. His favorite book in the reading center is Cats Sleep Anywhere, which he plans on reading to anyone who enters the reading center.

Meet the Reading Partners Team

Alexis Bond

Regional Site Coordinator for Baltimore

After serving my first AmeriCorps term with Reading Partners Baltimore as a Site Coordinator, I’m very happy to be able to help more of the city this year as a Regional Site Coordinator. I will be travelling between 5 of our Reading Partners schools in order to support the Site Coordinators, Literacy Leads, and volunteer tutors. While you might not see me every time you are in the center, know that when I’m here, I’m here to help! After receiving a BA in English from Haverford College, Pennsylvania and an MA in Medieval Literatures from The University of York, UK, I knew I needed to come back to my hometown of Baltimore. I’m glad to have found Reading Partners and proud to work with such passionate individuals as we strive to get our students reading proficiently for 4th grade and beyond.

She has extensive experience designing curriculum that incorporates literacy skills into science and social studies lessons in project-based learning environments. As a former AmeriCorps member with Citizen Schools, Kendra is passionate about bringing community volunteers into schools. Kendra earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Williams College and then earned her master’s degree in education from Lesley University.
